Nausea During Pregnancy: Causes and Tips to Relieve It

Misselijkheid tijdens de zwangerschap: oorzaken en tips om het te verlichten

Nausea during pregnancy, also known as morning sickness, is a common symptom experienced by many women. These complaints mainly occur in the first trimester. Although often referred to as 'morning sickness,' it can occur at any time of day. Fortunately, there are ways to alleviate the symptoms and in some cases even prevent them. In this blog, I share the possible causes and helpful tips to reduce nausea.

Causes of nausea during pregnancy

Although the exact cause of nausea during pregnancy is not entirely clear, several factors can play a role:

  1. Hormonal changes: During pregnancy, the hCG hormone (human chorionic gonadotropin) increases sharply. This hormone is associated with nausea and vomiting, especially in early pregnancy.
  2. Increased sensitivity to smells: Many pregnant women notice that they are more sensitive to certain smells, which can trigger a nauseous feeling. This may be related to hormonal changes that enhance the sense of smell.
  3. A sensitive stomach: During pregnancy, digestion can slow down, contributing to bloating and nausea.
  4. Stress and fatigue: Pregnancy often brings physical and emotional changes, which can cause stress and fatigue. This can worsen symptoms of nausea.

Tips to relieve nausea during pregnancy

Although nausea can be an unpleasant symptom of pregnancy, there are several ways to alleviate the complaints and get through the day better:

  1. Small, frequent meals: Try never to let your stomach become completely empty. Eating several small meals throughout the day, instead of three large meals, can help. Choose light snacks such as crackers, rice cakes, or fruit.
  2. Avoid strong odors: If certain smells make you nauseous, try to avoid them as much as possible. This can include certain food smells, perfumes, or even cleaning products.
  3. Ginger: Ginger is known for its calming effect on the stomach. You can drink ginger tea, eat ginger cookies, or even try ginger supplements, always in consultation with your healthcare provider.
  4. Stay hydrated: Make sure you drink enough water, especially if you are experiencing vomiting. Small sips of water, herbal tea, or broth can help you stay hydrated.
  5. Avoid fatty and spicy foods: Heavy, fatty, and spicy foods can irritate the stomach and worsen nausea. Opt for light and neutral foods like toast, oatmeal, or bananas.
  6. Vitamin B6: Some studies have shown that vitamin B6 can help reduce nausea. You can therefore try taking a vitamin B6 supplement to reduce nausea.
  7. Rest and relaxation: Stress can worsen nausea. Try to get enough rest and practice relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises or yoga.

When should you seek help?

In most cases, nausea during pregnancy is harmless and disappears around the 12th to 16th week of pregnancy. But if you suffer a lot from vomiting and cannot keep enough fluids or food down, you may be experiencing hyperemesis gravidarum, a more severe form of pregnancy sickness. This requires medical attention, so contact your midwife or GP if you are concerned.

Conclusion

Nausea during pregnancy can be very bothersome, but fortunately, there are several ways to alleviate the symptoms. By making small changes to your eating patterns, getting rest, and avoiding triggers, you can hopefully find some relief. Remember that every pregnancy is different, and what works for one person may not work for another. Continue to listen to your body and do not hesitate to seek medical help if the nausea disrupts your daily functioning. I myself drank a lot of ginger tea to calm my stomach, but of course, this will not apply to everyone.
